主题：Conflict Legacy and Trade Distrust

Abstract:

What factors underlie the persistence of the economic legacy of conflict? We examine how the Korean War (1950–1953) shaped Sino-U.S. trade patterns over a period spanning more than half a century. In a difference-in-differences framework, we find that Chinese cities that experienced higher soldier casualties during the war engage in significantly less trade with the U.S. compared to other countries, even 50 years after the ceasefire. The results imply that the Korean War fostered enduring distrust and unfavorable attitudes toward the U.S. among the Chinese public, which has subsequently impeded Sino-U.S. trade. The study underscores the long-term economic consequences of historical conflicts and emphasizes trust as a crucial channel through which international trade is shaped.

主讲人简介: 韩金镕，u8国际世界经济系助理研究员、硕士生导师。主要研究领域为国际贸易、数字经济。在《经济研究》、《管理世界》、《中国工业经济》、Management International Review等国内外学术期刊发表论文10余篇。主持国家社会科学基金青年项目、北京市社会科学基金青年项目。曾获北京市第十七届哲学社会科学优秀成果奖二等奖、北京市优秀毕业生。
